A MICROPHONE that once lived in a music studio had the bad habit of always interrupting others when they spoke. “I want my opinion to be heard first”, he used to say to the other inhabitants of the studio, speakers, headsets, amplifiers and other electronic devices who felt that he lacked the patience to listen to them when they talked.
One day that he had gone out for a walk, they agreed to teach him a good lesson: they would all talk at the same time and interrupt him every time he tried to speak without waiting for him to finish his sentence. So as to best coordinate, the console would act as a director, pointing at who would be the next one to interrupt. In the end, it would look like a choir, the difference being that nobody would be able to finish his sentence without being interrupted. As soon as the microphone returned, a speaker addressed him to ask where he had gone. No sooner had he finished his sentence than the microphone interrupted him. The console then pointed at an amplifier who in turn asked a second question to the microphone before he finished answering the first one. A headset followed with a third question, and soon, each and every electronic device in the studio was talking on top of each other. The microphone was so confused that he lost count of whom to interrupt first. He, then, did the first thing that came to his mind: he spoke even louder so as to be heard. Yet, the noise the electronic devices were making was too loud. “Will you finally stop…!”, he angrily shouted. “But you’re the one who keeps interrupting the others as they speak, not even waiting for them to finish their phrase...!”, the electronic devices replied in one voice. Then, they burst into laughter as they realized they had indeed coordinated as if in a choir. Our good microphone, on the other hand, went red with shame. From that day on he decided to let others finish their phrase first and then open his mouth. Much to his surprise, he found out that others were also more patient with him and even listened more to what he had to say. ...
