A TRUMPET that once lived in a music school had such a loud voice that she could be heard from miles away. And proud of her voice she was, as she thought she was speaking clearly when in reality she was yelling. The other musical instruments, however, covered their ears every time she spoke and called her 'fishwife' behind her back. At times they even avoided her, wearing earplugs which they hid beneath knit caps and other hats.
Quite ironically, she thought they disliked her and thought little of her opinion. Things went really out of hand when one day the musical instruments organized a rehearsal without inviting her, as they feared she would disturb them with her loud voice. "If we invite her, she'll make sure no one else is heard", the flute, whose voice was soft and low, said.
When the trumpet found it out, she went mad with anger. "How could they possibly not invite me. My voice is clearer and more beautiful than everybody else's!", she wondered. So, she went straight to the conservatory, sat in the audience seats and patiently waited for the musical instruments to finish their rehearsal. As soon as they had finished, the trumpet went on stage to ask them the reason. To be on the safe side she thought it would be best to speak through the microphone that was connected to the speakers, so her voice would be heard in every corner of the room. "Rumor has it that you are rehearsing without me", she said, her voice echoing through the walls of the conservatory. No sooner had she finished her phrase than the musical instruments were covering their ears to protect them from the loud sound. Yet she didn’t lose heart. She grabbed the microphone once more and kept speaking loudly, until at some point… the speakers of the conservatory exploded. The musical instruments fell to the ground to spare themselves from the disaster. "Look at the terrible mess you have caused with your constant yelling", the cymbal, who had gone deaf from her loud sounds, told her. "If you didn't yell so as to get heard, you would have found everybody's ears open", he added. She became very sad to hear it. But this time she realized what was the real reason why others always covered their ears every time she opened her mouth. "My mistake... I am very loud speaking by nature", she told them, coming to terms with why everybody avoided her. The other musical instruments laughed to hear it, but as soon as she burst into tears, they apologized to her. As for our good trumpet? She tried really hard from that day on to speak normally, without shouting, sometimes even with a soft or low voice. And did she really do so? That's a really good question for a trumpet, but truth be told, the other musical instruments also did their part in paying greater attention every time she spoke. ...
