A QANUN that once lived in a music school got curious about his ancestry. “I would very much like to know my origins”, he kept saying and asked the other musical instruments to tell him. “I’m sure that a fine music instrument like me will have roots in an equally great and ancient civilization”, he said. Yet, no instrument in the music school knew the answer.
Until one day, a baglama that came from Istanbul claimed he had seen other music instruments like him in his country. As soon as he heard it, the Qanun got so excited that he packed his bags and left for Turkey. When he met his look-alikes, however, he got even more troubled by what they told him: “Some say we come from Arabia, or even distant Persia.”.
The Qanun got even more confused from the answer, yet the very idea that he came from such a great civilization like the one of the Persians or the Arabs excited him even more. So, he packed his bags again and travelled to distant Persia in search of his roots. Much to his disappointment, however, the music instruments he encountered there confused him more: “Some say we come from Ancient Mesopotamia, or maybe Egypt”. “It’s highly likely”, the Qanun thought, “that a fine music instrument like me comes from… Egypt, which was one of the greatest ancient civilizations of the world!”. And with those words he took the plane to Egypt. As soon as he got there, he found the answer he wanted to hear, as the music instruments he met told him: “You’ve come to the right place, as it is said we come from the Egyptian harp”. The Qanun got excited in the idea of having such a proud ancestry and asked to see the musical instrument. As soon as they presented him with an Egyptian harp and he heard the sound of her chords, however, he thought the sound was so distinct from his own that there was no way they could possibly be related. “You must be mistaken”, the Qanun told them, then packed his bags again to return home. Disappointed with his fruitless quest, he went back to the music school where the other musical instruments were rehearsing a music show about Ancient Greek music. “Everybody is proud of their origin… but what about me?”, the Qanun whispered with disappointment as he knocked on the door. “You might find it interesting…”, the musical instruments told him as they opened the door to uncover a strange musical instrument with a single chord that had come from the museum of ancient Greek technology for the specific show. “It’s called Pythagoras’ ‘monochord’ and comes from Ancient Greece. When we told him your name, he told us you ’re distant relatives!”. And so, our good Qanun that had travelled to many countries in search of his ancestry got what he was looking for in his home....
