A BOUZOUKI that once lived in a music school had a bad habit of throwing flowers to others every time he played music for them. And he was indeed very talented, yet he thought really high of himself, even coming to believe that he was destined to one day play at an orchestra. “You’re not even fit for a school band…!”, the other musical instruments mocked him.
One day, he thought of making his dream real. After thorough research, he knocked on the door of a prestigious conservatory, which was rumored to be the home of some of the greatest and most talented musical instruments in the world. “Excuse me, I’d like to play in an orchestra”, the bouzouki confidently told a harp that opened the door, only to see her give him a suspicious look from top to bottom, as she had played in a lot of music performances and didn’t remember ever collaborating with a bouzouki. “If you only give me a chance, I can prove my worth to you”, the bouzouki said. Not wanting to decide herself, she summoned the other musical instruments to take the responsibility. “Alright then. Show us what you can do.”, a strict cello told the bouzouki. Then the rest of the musical instruments, trumpets, guitars, pianos and violins gathered around the visitor to see if he was indeed talented. The bouzouki was so excited that he gave his best self, playing all time classic folk songs from past decades. After the other musical instruments heard him play, they held a meeting to decide whether they wanted him in their team. “He is talented, but he’s not a good fit”, the harp told him. “He would be a good fit in a music show for traditional folk instruments, however”, a Cypriot violin, who knew much about folk music, told them. They then took the decision to give him the chance he asked for: the bouzouki would show up in a music show in which he would entertain the crowd with favorite folk songs from the past, then combine his skills with those of the other musical instruments to present something modern. “Please understand, this is a real music stage and not a cheap night club”, the cello warned him. “You need to adjust!”. The day of the performance, our good bouzouki gave his best self. The crowd was so excited that they stood up to applause him. As soon as the first part of the show was over, and seeing he had almost made his dream a reality, however, he took a basket filled with red flowers and started throwing them to the crowd. “Didn’t I warn you this is no cheap night club?”, the cello told him as soon as he saw the red flowers. Then, one after another the musical instruments of the orchestra burst into laughter and started rolling on the floor. As for our good bouzouki? Red with shame, he realized that if he wanted to really be part of an orchestra, he would have to forget or at least hide his old ways....
