A POOR AND HONEST FARMER died one day and his soul appeared before the gates of Heaven. The same time a rich lord also happened to arrive, who wanted to admitted to Heaven as well. He even brought a big cart that was loaded with gold, precious stones and other objects of a high price, which he thought would guarantee him entry. St. Peter appeared in front of them, carrying the key to Heaven, who opened the doors and welcomed them.

The rich man excitedly passed the cart through the gate and started unloading the golden objects to offer them. An angel then appeared in front of them, carrying a big scale on which he asked to place what they felt was most precious to them. As expected, the rich man first took the items that were on his cart one by one and placed them on the scale. The farmer, however, who had brought nothing with him, got really sad, as in his whole life he had never managed to possess anything of value.

In his despair he placed his hands in his pockets, where he found two pieces of wheat which he had inadvertently picked up while working in the field. With no further thought, he placed them on the ride hand of the scale. Then, before everybody's amazed eyes and despite the weight of the gold, the scale tilted to the left side.

The Angel then told them: "It's not the weight of the wheat, but rather the poor farmer's sweat in the field all these years that tilted the scale". The rich man then loaded his valuables again on his cart and departed in shame.
