A MIRROR that once lived in a household had little taste for flattery. "I just tell it as it is", he used to say to the silverware of the house every time they met. And so, they avoided him, as he always highlighted their flaws and shortcomings and his company was rather unpleasant.
Until one day, the scale happened to pass right in front of him. "Good morning ms Scale", the mirror said, "how come the other silverware have no problem speaking to you, whereas they turn their back on me whenever I open my mouth?"
"It is because I'm broken for many years now, and nobody took notice. Whenever someone steps on me and asks me to tell them how much they weigh, I show less than they actually are", the scale replied. "Not only are they flattered, but they fight with each other to decide who will be the first to use me", she added, then went on her way.
Hearing her words, the mirror decided to change his tactics: he thought that if he wanted to be liked, it would be wiser to use flattery. Should someone happen to look at their reflection, he thought it wise to show them more beautiful than they actually were. Within but a few seconds he had forgotten everything about telling the truth or being honest with others.
A decorative amphora was first to pass from right in front of him, and the mirror did his best to make her look better than she really was. "I think my chins are slightly thinner", she thought, then focused on what she saw, as the mirror did his best to show her slimmer and more beautiful than ever before.
Second, a porcelain vase passed by. "Seems like I got curvy!", the vase exclaimed with enthusiasm and the mirror also did his best to make her curves look even more attractive and round than ever before. Third, passed a flower vase containing artificial flowers. As soon as the mirror saw them, he did his best to make them look fresher and more beautiful than ever. "Well, look at my flowers! How natural they look!", the flower vase exclaimed and couldn't help but keep staring at its reflection. Soon the news spread like wildfire, and the silverware of the household flocked in front of the mirror. To make sure he would keep their attention, he in turn made them look slim and beautiful. So much did he even enjoy it, that he learned the various forms of flattery by heart, even adding his personal touch when someone came over to take a glimpse of his idol: "you look your best today - what you wear looks really good on you - you're a real piece of art", he used to tell them. The only one not to fall for his flattery was a golden trophy who didn’t show up at all, and so the mirror got really curious as to what was really going on. Certain for his flattery skills, the mirror started looking for the golden trophy. He searched the whole household, until many days later, when he found what he was looking for, he couldn’t believe his eyes: the golden trophy was placed on the scale, which was shattered into a million pieces from the weight. The silverware had gathered around it out of curiosity to discover the cause. "She thought she deserved a golden trophy for all the lies she was telling people all these years", the golden trophy exclaimed. "Yet, as soon as I stepped my foot on her, the weight of my gold shattered her. For a golden trophy is best deserved not by the one telling the biggest lies, but rather the hardest truths", the golden trophy added, finally turning his attention towards the mirror. No sooner had the golden trophy finished his words, than the mirror broke into a million pieces out of his shame, one for each small lie he had told others the days before....
