AN ASPARAGUS that once lived in a grocery store loved painting with brushes, which he handled with great skill and care so as to draw paintings of unbelievable detail. The other fruit and vegetables were very fond of his talent, yet wondered that he barely ever managed to finish his works, as all these details he came up with, consumed way too much time.
“It takes you so long to finish a single painting that in the end you’ll end up homeless”, the kiwi, which had made a fortune by starting his own barber shop, told him strictly one day. The asparagus got very angry to hear it, and set out to prove him wrong. So, he thought of drawing a painting of such incomparable beauty that he would make a fortune by selling it and never have to care about money again.
First, he thought of painting the moon, which was full that night. He took a canvas board and applied dark blue paint on it so as to draw the sky. Then he added lots of bright yellow and orange dots for the stars with the small brush, as well as a full circle for the moon with the wider one. Once he had the moon in place, he used the small brush to draw all the fine details on the moon, that is, the craters, peaks and valleys. So much attention did he even give to painting the slightest detail, that, in the end, the moon hid in the morning sky and the bright Sun took its position. “Good morning to you!”, the other fruit and vegetables told him once they were all awake and then went straight for breakfast. Our good asparagus, however, got sad that he did not manage to finish his masterpiece on time. So, there was nobody found to buy it, as it was left half-finished.
Second, he thought of painting the Parthenon, which would definitely remain in position for the amount of time required. After picking up all his brushes and paints, he walked to the Acropolis of Athens and placed his seat at such a position that he could easily observe each and every detail of the great architectural monument. First, he applied blue paint on the canvas board for the sky and then used grey to paint the temple’s columns. So immersed did he get in what he did, that he took no notice of how quick time passed, only to keep adding brush strokes until eventually the Sun set and the moon appeared on the skies, showering the Parthenon with its magnificent light. “It’s so beautiful, yet so different!”, the asparagus exclaimed with awe at the beautiful sight. Yet, as soon as he looked at his painting, he realized he had run out of time, as the sight of the monument at night was very different than what he had painted during daytime.
Last, he thought of painting Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. “At least she won’t move until I’m finished”, the asparagus thought and placed a poster of her on the wall next to his canvas board. He then drew the outline using the fine brush and started adding strokes so as to define the details, like the eyes, the nose and the hair of the mysterious woman. So much did he devote himself to what he did, even, that he took no notice of the other fruit and vegetables that had gathered around him to observe his every brushstroke.
“Shame on you for ruining it!”, they told him when he accidentally spilled green paint on the top of the face he had so diligently managed to paint. Disappointed, they went back to their businesses. As soon as our good asparagus realized he had destroyed his masterpiece, he was let down once more and thought of giving up.
“But I really like abstract art”, a tomato that loved art told him. She, then, suggested to him that he should keep adding brushstrokes like the last one with which he had accidentally ruined his work, this time with the wide brush, so as to form something completely new, based on his inspiration instead of copying an existing piece of art.
So it happened. The asparagus took the brush, dipped it inside the paint and applied it all over the board as he felt fit. A few brush strokes later, the painting had evolved into something completely different, yet unbelievably original: the colors blended so finely together as they covered all the smudged details of the face of Mona Lisa that one would think the masterpiece had come out of the finest art galleries in Paris. The asparagus felt both happy and relieved with the result, despite the fact that he had not spent countless hours painting details on the board.
“We buy it!”, the other fruit and vegetables told him as soon as they saw the painting, and gave him a fortune to possess it. And so, not only did our good asparagus manage to finish his first piece of art, but with the help of the tomato learned how to paint exactly as much detail as needed so as to finish each painting on time.
