A FLOWER WREATH that once lived in a flower shop thought very highly of herself and always wanted to be admired.
Yet one fine April day, she got very disappointed when the housewife happened to pick her up and place her right outside her front door’s house as a decoration, as the house was at the basement and she went unnoticed by all passersby. Giving it little thought, she simply jumped off the door and went in search of another to decorate.
Through rain and wind did she walk for many days, going from alley to alley, until in the end, she found herself at one of the city’s major avenues. After taking a casual stroll through the city and staring at the shopfronts, she reached the city square which was, at that particular moment, filled with fragrant and colorful flowers to celebrate May Day. “I’d best avoid getting lost in the crowd if I want to be noticed”, she thought and kept wandering.
After a while, she found herself in front of the City Hall. “This is definitely the place to be admired!”, the wreath exclaimed, and placed herself right in front of the door. No sooner had a few minutes passed, than she found herself in the center of attention, stared at by all sorts of passers-by with awe.
As soon as the door opened, however, and the mayor came out, she got very disappointed, as he caught everyone’s attention by giving them a speech about the importance of May Day. Soon, even more people amassed, others staring at him with awe and others clapping non – stop and cheering. And as the flower wreath was not used to being ignored, she jumped from the door and ran away in anger and shame.
So, she kept walking in the city, coming across many doors, never to be satisfied by any of them. In the end, she found the big door of the city’s Cathedral and got amazed at the bell tower’s height, as it reached as high as the sky. She, then, went inside, climbed the stairs, and made it to the top of the bell tower. After plucking the needed courage, she placed herself at the top of the wind vane.
Within a few minutes, a huge crowd gathered below the bell tower, staring at the unusual sight and wondering how a flower wreath with such beautiful flowers that was usually found at the doors of houses, had found itself decorating the top of the Church’s bell tower.
The wild wind blew then, and the wind vane rotated with full force according to the wind’s direction, which constantly changed. And so, the flower wreath that was attached to it was forced to toss all of her flowers to the crowd below. And what a beautiful sight they were, as some of them were white, others red, whereas others violet and yellow, yet all of them were to be seen falling from the sky on the heads of the people below. The crowd below compared it to a ‘flower fountain’. As soon as they picked the flowers from the ground and cleaned them with caution, they brought them to their noses and let their beautiful, intoxicating smell fill their nostrils.
As for our good flower wreath? Well, not a single flower was to be found on it, only the green branches and leaves that kept them together. So happy was she to have reached her goal, however, that she decided to celebrate May Day from that day on by giving away all her flowers every year.
