A BEETROOT was once very concerned of being forced to stay indoors at the grocery store every time the rain was pouring outside. So uncomfortable did he feel even about the walls of the grocery store being grey and dull, that he got depressed.
One day that he saw the asparagus draw a painting, however, he felt that if he could give some color to the grocery store’s walls, it would make him feel less uncomfortable.
“What would you say if we gave them a brighter color?”, he asked the other fruit and vegetables of the garden and they simply nodded in agreement, as they could no longer see him depressed. “Well, it has to be something more beautiful that the grey that covers them now”, they answered and asked him to find whatever colors he felt fit. So, the beetroot went to the nearest city and bought three boxes of paint: one red, one green and one blue, as well as brushes, a tracksuit and newspapers.
After covering the ground with newspapers, he, first, opened the red color box and dipped the brush inside. Then, he lay the color on the first wall with swift movements and kept repeating until a few hours later he had covered every wall with red. As soon as he finished his work, he asked the other fruit and vegetables what they thought of it. “Just because you ‘re red doesn’t mean the walls have to”, they told him and scolded him, as red was not fitting to the walls of the grocery store.
The second time, he thought of painting the grocery store green. He then opened the second box, dipped the brush inside and started painting the walls. When after a few hours he finished his work, he asked the fruit and vegetables again to tell him their opinion. Yet, they scolded him again: “It looks like a valley now”, they told him and asked him to find another color to paint it.
So, the third time, he painted the grocery store blue, as it was the only color. Yet, as he had already applied two layers of color on the walls, he used more paint this time to cover them up. Running out of blue as a result, when the time came to paint the last wall, he managed to paint only half.
“It looks better now, as it reminds us of the sky”, the other fruit and vegetables told him and asked him to go to the city again and bring back more paint so his work wouldn’t be left unfinished. So it happened.
Underway, however, the beetroot was met with rainfall and found shelter to protect himself. As soon as the rain stopped, the rainbow came out, with all its beautiful colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. So amazed did the beetroot get at the rainbow’s sight that he bought an equal number of color boxes, one for each color. As soon as he was back, he set out to paint the most beautiful rainbow on the wall.
“How does my masterpiece look?”, he asked the other fruit and vegetables and pointed to the fourth wall, on which a beautiful rainbow was to be found. “Well, that’s excellent!”, they told him and burst into applause to see that he had even painted clouds and a Sun.
Proud for his creation, the beetroot decided from that day on to spend more time indoors when it is raining outside, so as to best appreciate the rainbow when it comes out after the rain.
