AN EXOTIC FRUIT that lived in distant Brazil, had the fame of a great painter. So popular were his paintings overseas that the fruit and vegetables of our garden thought of inviting him over to their country to organize an exhibition for them. The mysterious fruit accepted the invitation with joy and took the first plane to Athens.
“I won’t tell you my real name, as it is very difficult to spell. You can call me ‘Passion Fruit’ though, which is my artistic alias!”, the mysterious fruit told the fruit and vegetables of the garden that came to the airport to welcome him. They were very excited to hear it, but found it rather strange that not a single painting was to be found in his baggage, only brushes and tubes of paint.
As soon as their visitor locked himself in his room, the fruit and vegetables asked the pineapple, who was a renown painter: “How is he going to setup a whole exhibition without paintings?” Yet not even he knew the answer, as he also thought their visitor would have brought his work along.
The more days passed, the more curious they got. The “passion fruit”, as the famous painter wanted to be called, would only leave his room to eat and drink water and not a single painting was to be found in the room where the exhibition would supposedly take place, only empty frames and chairs. Yet, they did not dare ask him out of fear of insulting him.
Finally, the last night before the day the exhibition would take place, they saw the mysterious fruit leaving his room and heading straight to the balcony to get fresh air and inspiration from the moonlight. They then thought of sneaking into his room to see what he was up to. What they saw got them both puzzled and excited: the room was filled with paintings, others half-finished while others contained only a few brush strokes.
“Don’t be impatient! By the time the exhibition starts tomorrow, they will all be complete!”, the passion fruit told them after finishing his break. So ashamed were they of having walked in his room without permission that they immediately apologized.
Exactly as he had promised them, the mysterious fruit presented to them the next day not one or two or ten, but rather... a hundred complete works of art. Some of them were so detailed that the fruit and vegetables of the garden were left speechless. “This artist is extremely talented!”, exclaimed the tomato, who really loved art and had visited some of the best galleries in the world. The most beautiful of the exhibits even, was a painting of the moon and the stars, exactly as the night sky had looked the previous night when the great artist had gone out for his break. All the fruit and vegetables then, with the pineapple first who really loved painting, gave the passion fruit a big round of applause and shouted with excitement: “you are the biggest talent we have ever seen!”. Yet the passion fruit was not very surprised.
As soon as the exhibition was over, the guest packed his stuff to get to the airport. “As our talent is nothing compared to yours”, the pineapple told him, “could you perhaps give us advice on how to paint the way you do?”. The other fruit and vegetables nodded with agreement and waited for the great artist’s reply.
Much to their surprise, the passion fruit admitted: “I barely have any talent. But I have a gift far superior: it’s called passion for hard work”, he went on, and the other fruit and vegetables realized exactly what it was that made him lock himself in his room and work non – stop until the very last moment before the exhibition.
They then said goodbye to their friend, who went back to his home country, Brazil. Each and every fruit and vegetable got a gift painting from him, to always remind them that hard work is far superior to talent.
