THERE WAS ONCE A FATHER who had a very lazy son, who offered little help to him. The father, who was a widow, went each and every day to the woods to chop firewood alone. At times he got so tired that he couldn’t carry them back, and then a tiny elf with supernatural strength would appear and help him. The elf would vanish in an instant and the lazy son, who never helped, kept wondering how his father always managed to carry all the heavy load back home by himself.
His father told him about the elf one day, and the son felt so ashamed that he didn’t believe a word. That very same day, and while his father was in the woods, the elf knocked the son's door and offered him a beautiful rose. Just before saying goodbye he told him that they would meet again when the rose was in full bloom. The lazy son then picked up the beautiful flower and placed it in a jar of water.
Many months later, the father passed away on his deathbed. The son went over to wake him, only to be astonished at the terrible sight, however, as his father wouldn’t move a muscle. That very same day, the rose was in full bloom. And from that day on, the son had to do everything by himself, never to receive any help from the elf as a payback for his laziness.
