BACK IN THE TIME WHEN man was still exploring the Earth, big ships sailed towards the North Pole, hoping to be the first to reach those previously undiscovered areas. For more than a year straight, these ships treaded through icy waters, blizzards and snow, and the sailors on them had to endure all the hardship with no complaint whatsoever. Until they finally reached the northern end, where it takes weeks or even months, rather than days for the sun to set and rise, and so they kept on their journey with no sunlight to give them hope.
One day, one of those ships happened to get stuck in huge rocks that were covered by ice. With very little light to help them, its sailors walked on the ice ahead to discover where they were. As soon as they turned their back, however, they were terrified to see that their ship was lost in the thick mist, nowhere to be found. With only their few belongings and walls of ice surrounding them, they thought of setting up an igloo to stay for the night. Still, they kept looking for their fellow sailors, to no avail, however, as the last rays of sunlight became extinct. Eventually they gave up, thinking all was lost.
"It's probably Autumn in our homeland", they murmured and started dreaming of golden leaves falling from the trees and touching the muddy furrows below them. The watches they wore became their best friends, as daylight was never to be seen. They couldn't know when to sleep and when to wake up for the morning, as there was no morning and no night. The days were so similar, and the seasons as well, that they lost count.
One day, however, the clocks stopped ticking. "What will become of us now that there is no sun in this country? How will we go back?", they wondered and cried for the misfortune that had befallen them. Hot tears started dripping from their eyes, falling on the ice just below their feet. Then they turned their attention towards the sky where they saw a strange vehicle coming towards their direction.
It was Santa Claus's slate, who was flying over the North Pole to reach the far ends of the Earth so as to give each child their gift. As soon as they started waving at him, a strange parcel with a golden ribbon wrapped around it fell from the slate.
As soon as they opened it, they found what they craved for all this time: a lamp to light their path and a compass to get them home.
