A KUMQUAT that came from Corfu in Greece dreamt of one day becoming a great comedian. So much did he enjoy jokes, that every time he performed comedy in front of the other fruit and vegetables, he burst into laughter before finishing the joke. Most of the times, he ended up laughing all by himself, and the other fruit and vegetables made fun of him instead of enjoying the joke.
“Your jokes aren’t funny!”, the unsmiling okra told him one day, and he got really troubled. After worrying for hours, he decided to lay the blame on the jokes and ask for the advice of the zucchini, who was a renowned comedian and put on successful comedy shows that were attended by large crowds.
“My dear zucchini, is it bad that I am the only one to laugh at my jokes?”, he asked.
“Well, depends on the joke”, the zucchini replied with a smile. He then asked him to test his jokes on him.
The kumquat took out a big notebook and started performing his jokes one by one. It only took a few minutes for the experienced zucchini to realize the root cause. “When you laugh before others, it’s like forcing them to”, he explained.
He then asked him to rehearse his jokes privately, so that he could laugh with his heart on his own before performing them in front of a crowd. “In the end, and if you see that you can’t hold yourself in front of the crowd, it’s much better to simply apologize”, he gave him a final piece of advice and wished him good luck. So it happened. The very next day, the kumquat invited the fruit and vegetables of the garden to attend his show. They accepted his invitation with excitement, then sat on their chairs and waited for the first jokes to come. Yet again this time, and as the kumquat was used to laughing at his own jokes, no sooner had he finished his first phrase than he burst into laughter. “Well, I try not to laugh at my own jokes, but we all know I'm ridiculous!”, the kumquat justified himself. Much to his amazement, the crowd burst into laughter and clapped their hands with excitement: “We want more, more jokes!”. And so our good kumquat made his best effort, from that point on, to let his audience have the first laugh. So well did he, that they all laughed with their hearts, never to forget his performance. In the end they gave him a big round of applause so as to thank him and congratulate him on his improvement. Rumor has it than many years later, the kumquat became such a successful comedian that he ended up having his own TV show....
