AN EXOTIC FRUIT that came from distant Africa once visited our country and our very well-known garden, with the intent of putting on a magic show. “My name is Miracle – Fruit and if you ‘re curious about me, I will perform miracles in front you, in a show full of magic tricks beyond your imagination!”, he told the other fruit and vegetables who were very impressed by his words and couldn’t wait for the big day to come.
Days would pass and the other fruit and vegetables in the garden couldn’t stop wondering what the mysterious fruit was up to, and why he thought of himself so special that he claimed to be the ‘Miracle – fruit’. “He comes from a great family of African sorcerers, and will prove it to you onstage”, the pineapple, whose ancestors also came from Africa, explained to them. Everybody awaited the great show with suspense, everyone except the mango, who wanted to be a magician and knew well that there was no ‘miracle’ behind magic tricks, only clever preparation, skill and deceit.
“You’re a liar. You’re just a berry, and your ‘miracles’ are simple magic tricks that anyone can perform”, the mango told the mysterious fruit in front of the other fruit and vegetables. “And you ‘re a petty trickster that is jealous of my skills”, the miracle fruit scolded him, turning his back on him. So, the mango set out to prove there was nothing special about the arrogant stranger, reading through tomes of books about magic tricks so as to attend the show well - prepared.
On the big day, the fruit and vegetables sat on their seats with excitement and waited for the renowned magician to present himself.
“First, I will use my magic powers to draw any card of my choice!”, the miracle fruit exclaimed while entering the stage, wearing a black hat and carrying a wizard stick. He then took a set of playing cards and shuffled the deck right in front of their eyes. “To prove my magic skills to you, I will draw… the King of Wands!”, the magician told them, carrying the deck with his one hand, and with the other drew a random card which he then showed to everybody. It was indeed a ‘King of Wands’ and the other fruit and vegetables got excited to see his trick was a success.
“And now I will bend a spoon with the power of thought!”, the miracle boasted. He then took a spoon out of his pocket, held it with one hand and started rubbing it with his other hand. Much to everybody's surprise, as soon as he fixed his eyes on it, the spoon miraculously bended. “More tricks, more tricks!”, the other fruit and vegetables cheered with excitement.
“And now I will make a coin disappear miraculously in front of your eyes!”, the passion fruit told them and took a coin out from his pockets. He then placed it in the palm of his right hand and clenched his first. As soon as he let his fingers loose again, the coin miraculously disappeared. The fruit and vegetables burst into applause: “You’re a true magician!”.
“It’s no wonder I’m called… the Miracle – Fruit!”, the magician replied and took a bow. So thrilled was he, that he inadvertently let loose of his left palm, dropping the coin that had miraculously made disappear the very previous moment on stage. When he started running after it, the ‘King of Wands’ card could be seen as if flying right behind him.
“It’s tied with a string from his arm!”, the mango explained to the other fruit and vegetables. “And the spoon is made of a soft material that bends as soon as you rub it”, he continued and everybody realized that there was nothing magical about the tricks the mysterious fruit had just performed in front of them. The miracle fruit went red with shame. “I’m just an ordinary berry and my real name is… Syn-se-pa-lum”, the exotic fruit admitted in front of the others to avoid total ridicule.
From that day on, he realized that as important as it is for a magician to be able to perform his magic tricks in front of others with confidence, it is equally important not to forget that the show does not end after the first applause.
