ONCE UPON A TIME there was a young woodcutter, who lived in a derelict hut in the woods. One day that he was walking back home, he found a big oak tree, out of the wood of which he thought he could build a bigger hut, and make all sorts of fine furniture he could place inside. So, he took his axe out and aimed at the base of the trunk.
A fairy stopped him just before the axe hit the trunk, however, who told him: “My dear woodcutter, please don’t cut the tree down, as I call it home. I’ve been living here for more than a thousand years”.
The woodcutter then told her: “The hut I live in is ready to fall, however, and finding trees as sturdy as this oak is extremely difficult in this forest”. The fairy disappeared from right in front of his eyes, however, giving him no response.
The woodcutter thought about it again, and decided to spare the tree. As night was falling, he took the long way back to his derelict shack. Underway, however, thunder and lightning were to be heard and the wind started blowing so strong that he had to hide in a tree hollow to protect himself.
“Is my shack still standing?”, the woodcutter wondered as soon as the storm calmed down. When after many hours he finally reached his destination, he was left speechless with what he saw: in the place where the old shack used to stand, a magnificent mansion built out of the finest stone and marble was to be found, with big windows and a roof made of tiles sturdy enough to withstand any storm.
“It’s yours for a thousand years”, a voice was heard out of nowhere, sounding exactly like the fairy. In this mansion lived the woodcutter along with his kids and grandchildren, and in turn their own grandchildren, till a thousand years later the first tile fell from the roof.
