ONCE UPON A TIME there was a cunning carrot that used to live in a garden full of pests, and who had a dream of getting into politics. The farmer would often visit this garden along with his donkey; however, as they were both lazy, they were bored to take care of the insects. So the fruit and vegetables of the garden were left to their own devices against the countless pests and the weeds that showed up among them.

The carrot that wanted to be a politician |
The carrot then thought that maybe he could take advantage of the situation so as to become mayor of the garden, by promising to the other fruit and vegetables deliverance from the pests and weeds among them. And so came the day that he plucked up the courage to present himself and give his first speech.
The other carrots that gathered around him gave him a full round of applause, believing him to be some sort of savior. The other fruit and vegetables of the garden however were not surprised at all, and started to make fun of him, taking him for some kind of trickster. Not winning their support, he thought of asking the wise owl. She then replied: “If you want to go into politics, you have to promise the moon and the stars”.
The carrot, not knowing what the phrase truly meant, thought that the owl meant it literally. So he gathered the other carrots and they secretly headed for the nearest city, so as to search for the moon and stars and take them back to the garden. There they encountered a company of magician bunnies, who wore blue capes and hats with moon and star designs all over them. Taking it for some sort of sign from fate, the politician carrot asked the bunnies to come with him to the garden. They agreed, and hid in big paper cartons so as to go unnoticed.
The carrot then gave a speech in front of the fruit and vegetables for one more time, this time turning it into a sort of electoral gathering. Moments later the other carrots brought the cartons with the bunnies, on top of which sat the politician carrot, and said:
“A wise owl once told me that in order to get elected in this garden, I would have to promise the moon and the stars. I am not here however only to promise, but to let my actions speak”.
Just then the carrots opened the cartons. Out of them came the hungry bunnies, which however, instead of taking on the pests and weeds of the garden, ate the carrots in one quick gulp. And so the politician carrot was left all alone, and every other single fruit and vegetable ran to save their lives. Then suddenly appeared the farmer with his cart, who was shocked to see the bunnies raging in his garden. As soon as he saw them running after him, he grabbed a stick and started beating his lazy donkey to make it run. So lazy was his donkey however, that the bunnies were soon approaching them. Seeing he could not outrun them, he thought of outsmarting everyone: he grabbed a fishing pole, with which he fished the carrot, sparing it from the bunnies that were about to devour it. He then turned the pole so as to bring the carrot in front of his donkey’s face, which started running after it, never to catch it. And so the bunnies run after them, aiming for both the carrot and the cart, and they were all soon so far away from the garden, never to be seen again. This way, the carrot-and-stick method was discovered, and as soon as they were all gone from the garden, the fruit and vegetables went out of their hiding places and threw a big party to celebrate the fact that they had gotten rid of a bigger menace than the pests and insects that used to trouble them in the past. ...
